Mashabane Rose Architects

General information

Mashabane Rose Associates (MRA) was formed in 1995 and is a dynamic South African architectural and design studio consisting of two principals, Phill Mashabane and Jeremy Rose, both registered architects and members of the South African Institute of Architects. Our staff comprises of a number of talented, qualified architects who form the core of our practice and some technical staff.
Our work has focused predominantly on museums and cultural heritage site projects and urban design schemes, conservation and heritage consultancy, including research and development of heritage policy and legal framework, project management. Institutional schemes including the Robben Island competition’s winning proposal (which we were awarded out of a range of 250 international submissions) for exhibits along a walking trail or journey and an interpretation facility at the end of the journey looking out across the bay toward Table Mountain. This very sensitive world heritage site prompted a design response of subtlety and restraint with the building partially submerged in the landscape with planted roofs to partially conceal the building.

We also have experience in public works, community projects and human rights projects, such as HIV/ AIDS clinics. The context ranges from urban schemes with national character, as well as rural schemes, in South Africa as well as Africa South of the Sahara.

These substantial projects often comprise large teams of experts: researchers, film makers, designers, education specialists and graphic artists who collectively formulate the design philosophy with the architect and exhibit designer. The curator and architect then take the lead in the various processes, but working together in order to integrate the architecture, exhibits and experiential qualities.
