Chateau Gâteaux Company Information
General information
Customers of the well-loved Chateau Gateaux Patisseries can select from the wide range of over fifty items, sit down and indulge themselves in a beautifully decorated environment or take the product home, to the office or an outing. Indulgence is key and the selection reinforces that. It includes a range of 24cm and 18cm Gateaux, decadent individual cold and hot desserts, premium pastries and breads and a delicious range of gourmet sandwiches. While the primary focus is Patisserie – exceptional quality Gateaux, Desserts and Pastries – Chateau Gateaux also prides itself in its coffee offering as a superb accompaniment to its wide, delectable range of indulgences. The excellent quality coffee is supported by a range of exotic teas, hot chocolate and quality natural fruit juices. Highly trained baristas are on hand to serve customers and with distinctly French flavoured music playing plus free wifi it is easy to see why the Patisseries have become so popular.
Chateau Gateaux was born in 1997 in a basement warehouse in Sydney Road, Durban. Founding partner and MD, Ilan Lipschitz, is a Master Chef Pâtissier and internationally acclaimed Pastry Chef. Ilan studied and worked in his profession throughout Europe and the Middle East. Ilan played the leading role in starting and establishing the company which now dominates the premium cakes and desert sector of the hospitality market in South Africa.
In 2005, after operating for more than seven years from its modest 200msq rented basement factory the company made a bold move by upgrading to a state-of-the-art production facility. Designed in accordance with ISO22000 standards, the factory stands proud in Durban's trendy business estate, Riverhorse Valley. Substantial space and capacity were allowed for to grow production to meet the increasing demand for the range. However, the then generous space has been swallowed up and the factory will be re-locating to new premises, still in the Riverhorse Valley Business Estate in the next few months.
The quality and benefits of a frozen cake are proven and unquestionable. The frozen preservation process means no added artificial preservatives are used. Only the freshest, full dairy cream from the lush KZN Midlands is used as an ingredient or to make their own butter. The product can be stored in a frozen state for up to 12 months (not that you ever would be able to resist that long) and after defrosted, in a chilled state for between 3 and 5 days, depending on the cake. Mums love to keep a whole Gateau in the freezer and cut off slices for the family as they desire.
Chateau Gateaux entered the consumer market through its own branded Patisseries located in Durban North, Morningside, Hillcrest, Pavilion Shopping Centre and also in Ilovo, Johannesburg. The company opened its first Patisserie in Durban in August 2010 and, buoyed by its success, opened two more stores in Durban by September 2011and the Illovo store in November the same year. The Pavilion Patisserie is the latest to open its doors.
As well as proudly boasting its ISO22000, all products produced in the factory are HALAAL certified by the South African National Halaal Authority. The Patisseries are in the process of obtaining certification.
