Welcome to Hayfields Veterinary Hospital, our philosophy is to offer complete, compassionate care. We are situated in the leafy suburb of Hayfields in Pietermaritzburg. We boast a modern range of diagnostic tools and treatments, all within a purpose built veterinary hospital where your pet will receive top quality care.

Our hospital includes a dedicated operating theatre, climate controlled kennels, a in house laboratory, xray and ultrasound facilities, ECG and blood pressure machines.

Dr Derek Clover took over ownership of Hayfields Vet in February 2014. He qualified from Onderstepoort in 2007 and went on to practice in England for three years. There, as well as practising general companion animal medicine, he gained valuable experience in treating the ‘small furries’ such as rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and chinchillas. On his return he practised in the Natal Midlands prior to moving to Hayfields.

Dr Greg Mills is one of the founding owners of Hayfields Veterinary Hospital which was established in 1985. Over the years he has gathered a loyal following from all over Pietermaritzburg. Dr Mills is an extremely competent Veterinary surgeon with many years of experience to draw from.

Dr Cindi Leitch grew up on a farm in Northern Natal. She qualified in 2007 after which she practice as a large animal vet in Howick and Ixopo. She then gained vast experience working at the Hong Kong SPCA before returning home.

Dr Andrea Paul. After qualifying from Onderstepoort in 2014, Andrea moved to Wartburg where she now lives with her husband. In addition to working part time at Hayfields Vet, Dr Paul also runs a small animal consulting room in Wartburg. She is a dedicated and compassionate vet who always puts her patient’s needs first.

Sr Leslie Shooter qualified in Canada and has been practicing as a veterinary nurse for 20 years, seven of those last years being at Hayfields Vet. She holds a special interest in surgery and radiography. Leslie assists the vets in theatre, maintains and monitors anesthetics. She is also the radiographer, hospital nurse and pharmacy manager. Leslie runs weight loss clinics and is available to answer general questions on behavior , diet, parasite control and general pet health.

Tracey is our office manager. She works mornings at reception and deals with our accounts and admin .

Nola is our afternoon receptionist. She also keeps the front of shop items in stock. If you’re looking for a specific bed, toy or accessory, please chat to her.

Kerry is our morning receptionist. She keeps all the food in stock. If your pet has a specific dietary requirement, she will be more than happy to order it for you.

Our ever -cheerful kennel hands Eunice and Francina live on the property . They are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the hospital and kennels, sterilising our surgical instruments and assisting in the basic nursing care of our patients.

Kim Farkas joined the reception team in 2015. She has a special interest in canine behaviour and training and also runs her own pet sitting business as well as runs a puppy school.

Consultations run throughout the day and are booked on an appointment basis (see consulting hours on back page). Emergencies are seen as soon as possible and we endeavor to have a vet on duty throughout the day. After hours is shared between clinics in the area and the on call vet can be contacted by phoning the surgery.
