Junk shop 1982-2016
In 1982, 34 years ago, we decided to open a business in Pongola.

We borrowed R16, 000 to invest in our business and purchased stock as sensibly as possible. On 28 April 1982 our business, Junk Shop, was launched.

Our trading space at that time was 216 sq. Our aim was to offer the best possible prices, supply superb service and to make an effort to satisfy our customers.

After one year our floor space of 216 sq meters was too small. Adjacent businesses were keen to rent their space to us. JUNK SHOP grew due to the needs of our community.

In 2005 there was no way to expand and due to the growing demand and expectations of our customers, we then rent another premises of 3,000 sq and approached the OK GROCER franchise group. OK Grocer Supermarket is just an extension of our effort to satisfy our customers in Pongola.

During the year 2011, we again decided invested in Junk Shopping Center. This was a total revamp. Walls were knocked down and floors leveled.

Unfortunately the old image had to make way for a complete new shopping experience. Spacious isles, modern music systems, outside seating's, neat customer toilets and a new fast food eating place etc.

We are thankful to be able to create many job opportunities . Currently running at 280 permanent staff assisting us in Junk and OK Grocers.

Some of our employees has been with the firm for the past 30 years.

Through the years we have employed local people. Many of them with no or little knowledge and experience. It has always been our mission to build and train people. Currently many of our department managers are Africans.

We also care for our entrepreneurs that do business with us in Sodwana corridor. Their old shacks were upgraded to better accommodate them.

We have a personal interest in our customers, so much so that people in Pongola refer to Junk Shop as "ISITOLO SOMPHAKATI" - our own shop.

We believe that the success of our business is the combination of absolute dedication, care for people and their needs, and reliable service we offer to our clients.

Every morning our staff get together to start the day with prayers and singing. This off course the main reason for the loving atmosphere in our businesses.
