PE St George's Club Company Information
General information
The Port Elizabeth Club was started in 1806 by a handful of successful businessmen wishing to play billiards for relaxation after business hours. A room was rented at the back of the Algoa Hotel which stood in Western Road opposite Trinder Vlei.
Soon, however, the increased membership forced a move to larger premises on the other side of the Vlei in Bird Street.
The Club continued to flourish and attract new members. Once more there arose the need for more space. This resulted in the decision for a new building, which was erected between 1903 and 1905. The tennis court which was on the original plan did not survive, but the squash courts remained popular for many years.
In addition to the structural changes, so did the social life change. The outside "privies" became obsolete. There were no more "only pipe and cigar smokers". The complaints about poor Boer Brandy and stray pigs on the property no longer applied. The Club, over the years, has hosted a long list of dignitaries which included officers of various regiments stationed at Fort Frederick as well as captains and officers from the boats in the Bay. Sir Philip Woodhouse, the governor of the Cape of Good Hope, became The Club's first president and the presidential tradition remained in place until 1910.
It had become the first Elite Club of Port Elizabeth. However, financial problems arose with the depression and the "elite" reputation became a stumbling block for it failed to encourage young members to join. Retirement and deaths depleted the "old core" and in addition to this, the new St George's Club was started and served the younger set.
In time, the young club also ran into financial constraints, so it was decided to amalgamate the two clubs.
The financial situation failed to improve so the decision was made to sell the premises and scale down the club. This was done and now you have "The Club" - new and elegant, ready to serve its members and the Public into the 21st Century.
The Club is open to members and the public for meals, Monday to Friday, from 7:30am to 14:30pm.
The Bar is open until 18:00, Monday to Friday.
Sunday Lunch is from 12:00 until 15:00 on most Sundays.
