General information
Prostate artery embolization involves the mapping and identification of the prostate arteries supplying the enlarge prostate. Once at the target vessel, a small catheter (flexible tube) is inserted and small, micro-particles are injected to occlude the vessel. Once the blood flow has been arrested, the prostate, or at least part of the prostate, undergoes ischaemia and necrosis. The gland then undergoes involution and shrinks over time resulting in improved symptomatology.
