General information

Launched in 1988 in an effort to freshen up London’s scene with performances of quality works that had dropped off the radar, the NLO has long been at the forefront of classical music in the UK, working with leading artists at world-renowned venues.

These days we go all out to push the boundaries of orchestral performance, by crafting musical experiences for an untapped audience of young music lovers who are more at home in the clubs of Hackney than the concert hall.

Our shows go against the flow of expectation, tearing up the classical music rule-book with wild, experimental events for an audience who want to move about, open a beer, and clap when they like what they hear.

Through genre-defying collaborations with bands, electronic producers, DJs and visual artists, we’re introducing the orchestra to a mass audience, in laid-back gigs that cater for the interactive spectator.

But more than anything, we want to blow the lid off contemporary classical with organically constructed programmes of new music by composers who speak for the spirit of our time. Staying true to the NLO’s vision of an increasingly diverse orchestra with a new lease of life for the 18-40 generation.
